Six hours later they studied Steve’s blood work numbers on the computer screen.

“His white count has dropped but not far enough,” Dylan noted, pointing to a number. He wasn’t telling Marcy anything she didn’t know.

“Yes, but it isn’t enough to warrant not doing the third dose tomorrow. Just follow the same procedures as last time and I believe he’ll be fine. At least the nausea was better this time around.”

“I’m going to trust your judgment on this.” Dylan started toward Steve’s room.

Marcy’s heart swelled. He trusted her. He still found her reliable. Her husband had never been able to do that after Toby’s death, even before he’d started doubting her.

Dylan turned when she didn’t follow. “Is something wrong?”

She smiled. “No everything is right.” It wasn’t until that moment she’d realized how much she needed someone to believe in her. Having Dylan’s loyalty made her have faith in herself.

After the pizza party in a conference room with the patients singing at the ball, she and Dylan returned to their office.

“That went well. I think the kids are looking forward to performing now. At first I wasn’t so sure. Wasn’t even sure they’d show up.” Marcy sank into her chair.

“Yeah, I believe they will be a hard act to follow. Marcy, I wish you’d go home. Get some sleep in a real bed, not a cot in a closet.”

She gave him a defiant look and asked, “Are you going?”

He met her gaze. “Well, no.”

“Then I think I should stay. The final dose can be given at 4 a.m., and I want to be here for it.” Marcy squared her shoulders.

“But you have plenty of time to go home and come back.” His tone was a plea.

“So do you,” she countered.

“Okay. If we aren’t going home, then at least we’re going to get outside for a few minutes before the sun sets. I also think Steve and his parents could use a few minutes when we aren’t hovering.” He took her hand and tugged her toward the door.

She looked around. “Where’re we going?”

“For a walk. There’s a park just a couple of blocks from here.” Dylan clicked off the lights.

“I don’t think—” She stopped.

He took her elbow and nudged her forward. “Doctor’s orders.”

They headed out the staff door. Dylan directed her along the sidewalk and across the street then entered a gated path. Dylan led her along an easy trail to a creek. The birds chirped and flew away while the squirrels played in the trees. She watched in amazement when Dylan grabbed her arm, putting his finger over his lips in the sign for silence. He pointed to a rabbit.

“I must admit this is wonderful. I might not have thought I needed it, but I did.” She smiled and rolled her shoulders.

“Sit. Let me massage your shoulders. Those hospital chairs aren’t made for sitting in a long time or sleeping.” She sat on a smooth rock and Dylan positioned himself behind her.

“You can’t be much better off.” He gave her a look filled with concern.
